Razor Bumps on Stomach

While many men are discovering the painful world of waxing, there are still plenty of males who reach for their clippers and razors to tame hair that grows uncontrollably on the stomach. However, if common techniques associated with reducing the risk of irritation, nicks, cuts, and infection are ignored – they stand to get more than what they bargained for – razor bumps (also known as pseudofolliculitis barbae).

Appearance

The small bumps that decorate the stomach after a fresh shave range in color depending on the severity and color of the skin. Razor bumps can develop into pink, red, white, yellow, brown, and purple “pimple-like” bumps caused by irritation. When left untreated, an infection may follow, as well as the risk of permanent scarring.

Causes

Razor bumps develop after a fresh shave when regrowth curls back into the skin, causing irritation. Many times, the condition comes as a result to the shaver ignoring the following common causes:

a) Using Old Blades:

After two to three uses of a blade, it is suggested to purchase new ones in order to decrease the chances of developing razor bumps after a fresh shave. If you have sensitive skin or are prone to razor bumps, it is highly recommended to use a new blade each time you shave.

b) The Cost of Electric Razor Replacement:

If you use an electric shaver – replacing those rotary blades or foil every few months can become a pain due to the extravagant cost. Some shavers will eventually face a bout of razor bumps if they continue to use their electric shaver blades longer than intended. The risk of infection also increases the longer you continue to use worn blades.

c) Dead Skin Particles:

Dead skin cells can block the follicles that new hairs will grow out of after a clean shave. To remove these particles, consider using a lotion that contains alpha hydroxy.

d) Blade Sharpness:

Discard dull blades and always use a sharp instrument to remove hair from the stomach.

e) Long Hairs:

Before attempting to shave the stomach, trim long hairs using a pair of scissors to cut down on the risk of developing razor bumps.

f) Unsanitary Conditions:

With all of the dirt, grime, and sweat that can accumulate in the hairs found on the stomach, it is suggested to thoroughly wash the area with an antibacterial soap to prevent irritation and infection that may arise due to an unsanitary shave.

g) Electric Razor:

When using an electric razor to remove hair from the stomach – choose the highest setting, as lower settings can create close shaves that are known to cause irritation and razor bumps.
